Upcoming Schedule

Every Monday means a different retro decade.

Start Decade
Mon Oct 19 1980s
Mon Oct 26 1990s (again!)
Mon Nov 2 1960s
Mon Nov 9 2000s
Mon Nov 16 1980s

It's mostly a '90s app, but like House of Pain, we do jump around.

Chasing the Confetti

Have you ever seen the confetti drop?

When you get a Top 3 Score, there is a "confetti drop." It's a small animation to add a dash of delight. It shows up on the Results screen as your score tallies.

Since the app's user base keeps growing, it is getting more difficult to see this drop.

Casual Mode

Sick of the beatdown? Play in Casual Mode.

The latest update has Settings. One setting is for "Notifications" (daily reminders). You should turn that one on.

Another setting is for "Casual Mode." If you want to lose the timer and points tally, and play more casually and on your own terms, turn this mode on, too.

September Champ Crowned

JH_3 does it again!

I sound like a broken record. Can this trivia mastermind ever be stopped?

I may ask KS_3 to come out of retirement. He might have his equal in JH_3.

Congrats also to AM_6, DW_5, LT_1, MC_2, MP_4, and SF_3. You each had more than one win in September.

Good luck in October, everyone!

Two Mill Club

We now have five players in the club.

You join by getting two million points in a single month. It is based on a running tally, which I explain here: Monthly Points.

LT_1 was the first to do it. She did it in July.

Since then three others have joined: AM_6, JF_3, and MP_4. Will October see yet more?

Daily Notifications

Please "Accept Notifications" if prompted by the app.

If you give permission, you will get a daily reminder, just once in the evening, to play the D5.

If you play earlier in the day you won't get the reminder at all. It is just sort of an insurance policy to keep your daily streak going.

Thanks for playing!

Writer Promotion

I am pleased to announce that Colin has been promoted to Quizmaster 2nd Class.

He is the first writer in our esteemed crew to earn this honor. Congrats, Colin!

His quizzes are fan favorites, and Colin plays a key role in D5's success.

Thank you to all of my writers. Your different styles make the app so much better. Thank you!

More '80s Quizzes

I added some 1980s quizzes.

Check them out here.

Since this app is targeting Gen X it makes sense to start the More Quizzes archive with some '80s and '90s, right?

Show Your Love

Let quiz-authors know you liked a quiz.

I added a "thumbs up" icon to the Answers screen. Tap it if you liked that day's quiz. This will let the author know to "keep doing them like this."

If you really like a quiz you can tap two or even three times!

Thank you for playing, for liking, and for spreading the word.

August Champ Crowned

JH_3 does it again!

He won the month of August outright, and he even missed a couple days.

Honorable mentions go to: LT_1 (5 wins), plus JF_3 and MC_2 (3 wins each). Also MP_4 finished the month with 2 straight wins.

Winning even once is an achievement.

Good luck in September, players!

More Quizzes

At last! I cracked open the quiz archive.

There is a handful of select 1990s quizzes available for replay. Check them out here.

They are word-for-word the same quizzes that ran, so replays are unofficial and not eligible for the leaderboards.

This first set is a test run of sorts. So please give me feedback.

How Scoring Works

Accuracy is most important, then timing.

There is competitive tension created by wanting to get an answer correct, yet being awarded a higher score for answering quickly.

Here is the exact scoring formula:

Each question is worth 20,000 points. In theory, anyway. If you get it wrong you get zero points.

How Decades Work

The Daily 5 is mostly 1990s trivia. But, like Avril Lavigne's boyfriend, I went and made things more complicated...

Each Monday is a new decade, from 1960 to 2010.

Usually!

After the '90s, the '80s happen quite a bit, too. Then it becomes a mish-mash, so here is a table to explain it.

Monthly Points

This number is the total points you have scored for the entire month.

If you miss a day you get a zero for that day.

So try to play every day!

The tally resets on the 2nd day of the month. (It is alway 24 hours behind due to different time zones.)

This scoring approach was proposed by player from the community, VT_1. Monthly Points Tally runs in conjunction with the overall Monthly Wins.

Dirty Secrets

Psst. Here are some dirty secrets about The Daily 5.

Players Cheat
It is rare, but every week one or more players is deemed to have cheated. Their score gets removed from the database.

Not gonna lie, it was a bit of a shock to learn that people would bother cheating in my little app, but some do.

Writer Promotion

We are pleased to announce that another writer has been promoted to Quizmaster 3rd Class.

Our freshly minted Quizmaster is Jennifer Hlawacz. She discovered the app, became a regular player, and soon after started contributing quizzes.

I am so thankful to all of my trivia writers. Your different styles and perspectives make the quizzes more varied and enjoyable. Thank you!

The Race to 2M

Whoever reaches 2 million points in a month will get a badge.

Eventually the app will have some good stats and some badges, too. One badge will be for reaching 2 million points in a month. There are a couple of people that could do it this month, and even though the Monthly Points tally is unofficial (for now), I will make a note if 2 mill gets cracked.

And they will get a badge when I add in-app badges.

Friend-Trouncing!

There are 3 leaderboards so you can compete with friends and your own nation, too.

Most of us mortals cannot compete with the brainiacs dominating the Top 50 Leaderboard. That is for the best of the best, across this beautiful blue marble we call Earth.

Luckily, there are two other leaderboards for the "normies."

Retro for the Win!

You know what I love about retro trivia? When it takes you back.

My favorite trivia questions:

  1. Feel easy to someone who lived it, but are a head scratcher for someone who didn't.
  2. Make you go, "Oh yeah!"

When you go, "Oh yeah," I want it to be about something that is strongly associated with a particular decade.

The Writing Crew

This app would have fizzled fast if not for our talented writers.

Our four main writers are:

Other supporting writers are: Aaron Wrixon, Beth Pinsonneault, Chris Duda, Clementine P., Frank Peddie, Jason Ives, Katie Douglas, Katy Allen, Mike Wright, Tanya Coyle.

Thank you to all of our writers!

To My European Friends

A special note to people competing from Europe.

I have noticed a sudden uptick in players from Europe. Especially The Netherlands, and some surrounding countries. I am stoked!

This app is primarily focused on the USA, with a bit of over representation of Canada, because, well, I am Canadian. Also, the app is usually retro.

Play With Friends

The latest app update has a long requested feature: Friend Groups.

You can now add up to 4 friends to have your own exclusive group with its own Daily Leaderboard.

As D5 grows, getting a Top 5 score is becoming increasingly out of reach for most mortals. But in your own group of five besties you are guaranteed to finish in the Top 5! Every single day, too.

Top 3 Strategies

Here are three strategies to help you get a high score.

  1. If you have no clue guess quickly!
  2. First questions are the easiest
  3. Pay attention to the quiz author

Let me elaborate:

If you have no idea what the answer is just make a random guess without wasting time.

Ads Disgust Me

I am not kidding, I find ads revolting and I never want to tarnish this app by using them.

Here is the truth: Some ads are great. Clever, Super Bowl-style ads? Those can be fun to watch. If there was a way for me to serve up some high quality ads like those, this app would use them. Happily!

There is not.

Instead there is crap. And it is crap that does not pay well, either.

Big Favor to Ask

If you love this app I ask only one thing!

You can throw me a bone in less than 30 seconds.

Thank you! πŸ™

Double Champs?

Here is a new approach to calculating the monthly leaders.

First, the current system is not going away. But here is a fresh idea I am tinkering with, suggested by player VT_1.

Keep a running tally of total points each month, and show this ranking under a monthly leaderboard, just like we do for total wins.

Casual Mode

This is a running log of app milestones.

2026-10-03 β€” Casual Mode

2026-09-21 β€” Notifications

2026-09-15 β€” Promoted Colin

2026-08-25 β€” More Quizzes

2026-07-25 β€” Promoted Jennifer

2026-04-29 β€” Groups Added

The Bigger Picture

Here's where the app is headed...

There are tons of things I want to add to the app. At the top of the list are:

  1. Statistics
  2. Casual Mode
  3. Groups

"Statistics" will be a whole new whack of metrics:

Thank You, Writers

This quirky, little app would not be possible without the team of writers that have stepped up. THANK YOU!

My main three writers are Martin Boyd, Colin Sutcliffe, and Jennifer Hlawacz.

Supporting writers, focused on Weekend One-offs, are: Chris Duda, Frank Peddie, Katie Douglas, Katy Allen, Michael Wright, and Tanya Coyle.

Without the excellent and varied quizzes that these writers create this app would have flopped already.

We Need Your Help

Attention potential Quizmasters! We are always looking for quiz writers. Why don't you throw your hat into the ring?

This app is about community! The trivia is just a vehicle for a bunch of self-important pseudo intellectuals to hang out. You know. People like you and me!

Right now four people have written all of the quizzes. And I am thankful that anyone besides me even stepped up at all. Thank you Martin, Colin, and Katy. Your unique take on trivia quizzes β€”  the subjects and how you word things β€” make this little trivia community so much better!

Weekend One-offs

Weekend On-offs can be on anything.

They happen on Saturday and Sunday, and are standalone trivia challenges, unrelated to the Monday to Friday eras (like 1970s, 1980s, etc.)

The hope is that by random chance one of these one-offs is in the wheelhouse of someone that isn't always dominating the decade challenges. So we can share the riches, as it were!

2025 Champ is Crowned

The overall Champion for 2025 is Ottawa's MC_2! Congratulations, Marc!

It literally came down to the last day of 2025 to find a winner. FP_1 and MC_2 were tied until the last moment at 9 wins a piece.

(As a consolation prize, Frank (FP_1) did win the month of December outright.)

To see the final 2025 tallies for everyone that won at least one day click here.

We Hit 100!

We did it! We finally got over 100 daily active users!

The Leaderboard only goes to 100, and December 28, 2025, marks the first time ever that the Leaderboard got maxed out. The app just launched last month, and all traffic generated has been organic (not involving $$ for ads, which I don't have), so this is a H-U-G-E milestone. Thank you.

Hardest Quiz Yet

Last Sunday's "Love of Language" was the hardest quiz yet. The high score was 47,664 by TJ_1. Congrats to Tammy! It is cool to see a new name claim the top spot!

This is the first day that no one cracked 50k. Also, there were 8 people that scored zero, which does not even get ranked on the Leaderboard. (No, we won't name you here.)

Things will get easier when Monday rolls around. The era is the 1960s, and even if you didn't live though them, they are a huge part of our history, entertainment, and culture, so you will do fine. Peace! βœŒοΈ

That 1970s Rabbit Hole

First, this week the era shifts to the '70s! "Far out," right? Next, we are presenting the first Rabbit Hole!

I say "we" because Colin and Martin continue to write up quizzes with me! "Groovy," right? (Yes I am going to keep doing that. It is called "setting the tone," smart guy.)

So, just what is a "Rabbit Hole"? Well, that is a term I am using to describe certain trivia questions that will enjoy a mini write-up on the answers screen.

Community Contribs!

How cool is this? This weekend D5 gets its first community-submitted trivia questions!

Friday gets a '90s-themed question set from Colin S. (CS_2). Saturday and Sunday are both One-off contribs from Martin B (MB_1).

I have known both of these dudes since we were kids, and I am stoked that they put together some quizzes for us. Thanks, Guys!

Android Comes First

You know what comes before iPhone? Android! At least for this app. Here is why.

I am an indie developer. I don't have a team behind me, or dedicated QA personnel. So when I am making a new release, I test it on my own Android devices first. I have a phone and an ancient tablet.

Three Week Review

It has been 3 weeks since I launched this little app. In that time I have already done two app updates.

I want to thank you for playing. There is a core group that plays every day, and that is awesome and humbling. It motivates me to make this little puppy better and better.

I'm Curious

Did you ever want to just haul back and punch Mark Zuckerberg square in the face? Me too! I mean, look at him here. That Data-like face is a magnet for knuckles, I swear.
DISCLAIMER: It's a joke, people. Relax.

Want Reminders?

Text Reminders get sent 1 or 2x per week before 12-noon EST.

You can unsubscribe any time by replying "STOP" (without the quotes).

For now, the reminders require US or Canadian mobile phone numbers. The reminders are 100% FREE, and completely private.

There is no tracking of any kind, and your number is not shared with anyone. (I don't even know who you are β€” I am working off of a username, like AA_1, and a phone number. That's it.)

Here is an example of a daily reminder:

Hello friend! Plz remember your Daily 5! (to remove reminders just reply STOP)

That's it. Thanks for playing!

The '90s Have Begun, and a Thank You

After consulting my "Big 3," I decided to change the theme of The Daily 5 to the "1990s."

Having my Big 3 is like having three wise oracles at my disposal. They are my wife, Beth (BP_1), and friends Martin B (MB_1) and Mike W (MW_1). I take what they say very seriously, and I want to thank them publicly right here and now. Thanks, guys! I mean it!

Sharing is Caring

I take feedback very seriously. In the last update I did, rolling out now, the #1 reason for the update was because people told me they did not know that there was an in-app share button!

DOH! There was a button, but bad UX by me was not letting users know. (Users are never wrong. I 100% believe that.)

New Theme Coming Soon

We are going to mix things up a little. It is still, for now, going to be primarily 1980s themed. However, I have it in mind to add "1-day mixers," like "Geography", "Films", "Animals", who knows?

I am 110% open to feedback! (Note that extra 10%!)

You can use the Facebookβ„’ group I made to reach me. Just type "daily 5 community" into the search thingy on the Facebookβ„’.

Let me know some mixer ideas. I will throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks. See what gets a pop, as the kids said. Eons ago. Who knows what the hell they are saying these days? "Rizzle?" Get off my lawn, punk!

Some new themes will also give "other people" a chance to shine. (Who am I kidding? It is just going to be FP_1 and MC_2 all over again. *sigh*). Also...

I want to say Thank You!

Thank you for playing my little Trivia App. About 140+ people have registered their initials, which isn't that many. But, we get about 70 players on the Leaderboard per day. That is near a 50% retention rate which is off the charts!

You guys are in on this on the ground floor, and have the MG_1s and ZZ_2s to prove it. (Treasure them! They will be worth thousands of doll hairs some day!)

Keep spreading the word, friends! THANK YOU!

Want to Submit Questions?

Hardcore trivia nerds, or sweet souls that want to help a solo dev chasing a dream, can get involved by submitting five question sets with a theme of your choosing. Or no theme at all, just five juicy head-scratchers.

You will be credited with your submissions. I am hoping to build a community here, and appreciate participation from every angle.

Please send submissions to matt@onebuttonaps.com. Thanks in advance for your help. :)
